Israelis Race into Adelaide Semifinals
Israeli duo Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram powered into the Adelaide semifinals Friday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chris Haggard and Florian Mayer.
Second-seeded Erlich and Ram, who last year qualified for Tennis Masters Cup, suffered a shock first-round loss in Adelaide last year after winning the title on debut in 2006.
They next will play Aussie duo Chris Guccione and Robert Smeets for a chance to meet South American duo Martin Garcia and Marcelo Melo in the final. The fourth seeds Friday defeated Benjamin Becker and Oliver Marach 7-6(2), 6-1.
In Doha, Czech David Skoch and German Philipp Kohlschreiber saved two match points in the match tie-break to defeat South African duo Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 to win the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. It was their first tournament as a pair.
"It's a funny story," Kohlschreiber said of his pairing with Skoch. "We both wanted to sign with our usual partners, but we didn't make the cut. So we decided to play together and it worked out very well. David never loses track of things, and I'm more the hard hitter who goes for all or nothing. This is a great preparation for the upcoming tournaments and I'm glad to see that I played well here in Doha."
In Chennai, Israeli Harel Levy and Rajeev Ram advanced to the semifinals after defeating Igor Kunitsyn and Jim Thomas 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
